Basic icon coloring tutorial in GIMP. Go from to
.

Create a new 100x100 image and paste your base into it. Next, resize it. (To resize an image in GIMP, go to Layer > Scale Layer on the image window.) Take it down to the size you need, arrange it the way you want it to look. The image will probably be a 'Floating Selection' layer, to make it a layer of it's own, click the new layer button. Now, duplicate the layer (Layer > Duplicate Layer). I always do my modifications on a duplicated layer in case I mess something up.

My image now looks like this:

Next, go to Filters > Enhance > Sharpen. I usually set the controls to 40, but it depends on the image. Next, get the blur brush (V) and blur the skin. It may be set to sharpen, so go to the tool options menu on the main GIMP window and make sure the brush is set to blur. I usually set the opacity of the brush to 30-40.

Now for some color. Go to Layer > Curves and either load these settings or mess with the settings until it looks right with your image. Remember, with curves, take it easy and do small adjustments in each setting until it looks right for your image.

And there you have it. Simple and easy. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, I'd LOVE to see what you do with this, as it's my first tutorial.
